District News
Are you up for a challenge? Something that would help you and your club? Can you help us set a record for the most CL awards in any District worldwide? District 86 tops in the world?
Unless you read the CL manual very carefully you may miss that often you only need to do a few of the assignments in order to complete a project. In order to simplify the CL completion tracking there is a new CL Award application which includes how many assignments each project requires. The new form can be downloaded here: CL Award Application.
This is a great idea to focus on the overall Toastmaster opportunity for growth. Completing a CL (Competent Leader) gets you and your members involved in all aspects of building a great Toastmasters club. The challenge is for eacg club to get at least 5 CL this year. Compared to last year where one club earned 16 CL, and 5th place earned 8 CL, this is very doable.
Start by ensuring that each person doing an agenda role has someone completing their CL manual for that activity, as well as the other contributions they make towards building a successful club. Everyone should always have their CL manual with them!
A brand new version of the CL manual has just been released. Most of you are already working on the previous version and that’s fine. It still counts! However the new manual has been made easier to follow. All the pieces for putting Area 14 at the top of the CL list!

For those who didn’t make it out to the Spring Conference – you missed a really good one!
HIGHLIGHTS:
Brian Brennan (Area 13 Governor) was the Keynote speaker on Saturday, with his speech, “Sharing Brings Caring”. Very well done and enjoyable!
Mark Hunter (2009 World Champion of Public Speaking) from Australia, was the Keynote speaker on Sunday, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say he had everyone in the room completely mesmerized. He gave us his two winning speeches (Face to Face, Eye to Eye, Heart to Heart, and A Sinkful of Green Tomatoes), along with some information about the process he went through to develop a winning speech. Check out his website: www.markhunter.com.au for more information about this incredible person.
Annette Lavigne (Division M, Area 14, Speak for Success York-Bradford) came in third in the speech contest, with her wonderful speech “Embracing your L.O.P.”. Her speech was enjoyed by all and I hope we’re looking forward to a repeat performance next year!
Of course, one of the most exciting events is always the Business Meeting on Saturday afternoon (too bad you can’t hear the sarcasm!). Seriously though, this was an important event, as decisions were made that will affect all of us; I’m referring to the next District Executive, of course.
So here are the names of those individual who are going to lead our District to success in 2010/2011:
District Governor- Merri Macartney
Lt. Governor Education – Avis Brodie
Lt. Governor Marketing – Janice McDonald
Public Relations Officer- Katie Chida
I apologize that I don’t remember every Division Governor that’s coming in 2010/2011, but I can tell you who our Division Governor will be – ME! That’s right, I’ve decided to kick it up a notch for the next year. Hopefully I’ll still be welcome to visit the clubs in Area 14 from time to time!
So, there you have it – all the news I can remember! It always takes me days to recover from these conferences, and this one was my absolute favourite (and most exhausting)!
Have you been to a Toastmasters Conference? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing! They’re full of fabulous, inspiring workshops, wonderful speakers, great food, and lots of socializing and networking. If you’re anything like me, you’ll come away a different person!
